The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of the Low Carb Diet..."
Information about low carb diets appears regularly in every type
of news media. If you have a weight or health problem your doctor most likely has suggested that you should begin a low carb life
style.
........Yes, we all know it's good for
us, but we have a heck of a time getting and staying on that type of a diet.
Here in the U.S. consumers spend over $40 billion a year on
weight loss programs and products. Most of that money is wasted, because even though the programs can be effective we just can't muster up
the determination to stick with any one of them.
We all want to lose weight; we just don't want to give up our
poor eating habits to do it.
It's time to change that attitude. American's are getting
fat. The rising demand for medical services is an indication of just what that excess weight is doing to our health. One very good
answer is a low carb diet.
Nothing new about this one - Low carb diet information has
been around for years. If you wish to avoid the risk of heart disease you will begin now to move away from your fast food habits and into a
nutritious and delicious low-carbohydrate diet. Do you it for your health and your self respect.
Let's explain what "carbs" are all about. Consuming foods
high in carbohydrates results in a rise in your blood glucose. (Glucose is the amount of sugar in your blood.) This triggers a rise in
insulin to process the glucose and that's what is causing your weight gain.

Controlling the amount of food you eat; eating low-fat foods and
increasing your regualr physical activity will result in weight loss.
In the beginning of the diet, as you lower your carbohydrate
intake, your body begins to burn the carbohydrates it has stored. These are the carbs your doctor calls glycogen. While the glycogen is
being utilized your body releases water (not fat) and you lose weight. This discharge of water is how you quickly lose those first few
pounds.
It is not until your body burns up those stored carbohydrates
that it begins to generate energy by burning the fat it has stored.
Now we get a bit technical. The process of burning fat for
energy in the absence of carbohydrates results in ketosis. Ketones are byproducts of fat breakdown that build up in the bloodstream. Ketones are
then released from the body through the kidneys. Those who design low-carbohydrate diets proclaim that ketone production is a safe, natural
condition necessary for weight loss to occur.
Here's the catch. After you quickly lose those first few
water pounds, a low carb diet will produce a small and steady weight loss of one to two pounds per week.
Even though you will continue to loss weight as long as you stick
to the diet, it just isn't fast enough to satisfy most dieters. They give up on the low carb way and move on to look for some elusive fast
and painless fix.
Speaking generally, low-carbohydrate diets exclude foods rich in
carbohydrates. Those foods include bread, pasta, rice, whole grains, cereal, fruits, vegetables, some dairy and legumes.
A good low carb diet plan will include meals from all the food
groups. What will not be acceptable will be foods containing refined sugars and starches, high-fat dairy products and cuts of meat that are high
in fat. Hey, that's everything you now enjoying eating! Nobody said this would be easy.
But look, you can eat just about all you want of protein and
fat-rich foods like eggs, cheese, cream, butter and meat.
High on the list of approved low carb foods are whole grains,
dried beans, fruits and vegetables, non-fat or low-fat dairy, lean cuts of meat, skinless poultry and fish.
Foods high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fat are to be
rigorously avoided, because most calories come from carbohydrates with moderate levels of protein and fat.
As with most things there is another side to the low carb
diet. Not everyone agrees with how safe the process of ketosis is. For example:
Some say a low carb diet may be detrimental to kidney function
because of the extra work of processing ketones and proteins.
Here's another negative - The abundance of protein in the diet
may leach calcium and weaken bones. The salt and water depletion that occurs during ketosis may cause low blood pressure. Some even suspect
it might produce fatigue, fainting, constipation and kidney stones.
Just as with any major change your make in your life that could
affect your health, ask for your doctor's advice before you leap into low carb eating.
Here's the bottom line. A reduced-calorie, low-fat diet
includes foods that can help prevent heart disease. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and unrefined whole grains provide the body with vitamins,
minerals and nutrients that are essential to good health.
The good news is that these high-fiber foods will provide you
with a feeling of fullness. That reduces your appetite, you eat less and you lose weight.
Like most weight loss programs a low carb diet will
work. If you will let it!
