"Low Carb Dieting..."
"Why Should You Worry About Carbs in Your Diet?"
Interested in "lose weight diets", "healthy diet programs", "low carb dieting"? All very
good ideas, but is low carb dieting really among the best health diet programs and how does it work?
Do we all agree that the term "low carb" is a phrase we all understand and that it is synonymous
with loosing weight and getting in shape.
Low carb dieting seems to produce outstanding results and many dieters rave about it. It is
one of the best health diet programs - eat fewer carbs and loose weight. But, hold on, what exactly are the mechanics that make low carb
dieting work? |
The first item on our list is the easiest to understand. By removing carbohydrates from your
diet you are cutting calories from your overall intake of food. By chopping calories you are obviously eating less and when you eat less
you loose weight.
That part is just plain simple. But there's more...
In addition to eating less food your are consuming fewer calories. And
by skipping all of the starchy and sugary carbs that you would normally eat, your body is now breaking down glycogen from the liver and from
the muscles into free glucose.
Miller's Tips
Look Out! Almost all deli-style meats, ham, corned beef, bacon and
sausages have sugar and starch fillers as at least one of ther ingredients. Read the label to check the carb count. Not much to worry about
with those that have 1 gram or less per serving, but some are just loaded with carbs. What about "lowFAT" and "ultra lean" processed meat and
weiners type products? You can bet they have starches added. Did you know that lots of canned fish products are packed in liqueds that
contain sugar and starch added sauces.
Sure, but what is glycogen?
Glycogen is just glucose that is stored in the muscles and liver. This glycogen contains a large volume of water and by converting it to
glucose the water is released, so the initial weight loss is almost all water. This can be cause a substantial amount of weight to
vanish.
Extreme Weight Loss
After low carb dieting for the next two weeks you will
notice that the extreme weight loss experienced at first is now quicly slowing, because it was mostly water being released. Now youryour
body will start burning fat instead of releasing water. That will continue as long as your intake of carbohydrates is less than 50 or 60
grams daily.
Your body is now burning fat as fuel for the duration of
your low carb diet. When the body burns fat for fuel then ketones are produced. What exactly are Ketones? Ketones are a
byproduct that is caused when the body is burning fat for the fuel and energy.
These Ketones are released from the body through your
kidneys. When the ketone level increases in your kidneys your appetite is also suppressed a bit and allow you to lose even more
weight.
The caution flag goes up here. You must drink lots
of water during this phase of your low carb diet to prevent dehydration.
As with any "lose weight diet" how long you can continue
with low carb meals is a personal choice. As with anything that has to do with your health, it's recommended that
you consult a doctor before embarking on such a sudden change in eating habits.
Low carb dieting is among the very best healthy diet
programs as long as you use some common sense as you wave goodbye to those excess pounds.
